Many children lack food security, doctors report

Boston Medical Center doctors reported that the percentage of patients 3 and younger who were underweight increased from 12% in 2007 to 18% in 2010. The percentage of families with children who failed to secure adequate food monthly increased from 18% to 28% during the same period, according to the emergency-department survey. Pediatricians in Little Rock, Ark., Baltimore, Minneapolis and Philadelphia also saw an increasing number of malnourished and hungry children since 2008.
