In defense of social science research

Certain conservative lawmakers have decried government funding of social, behavioral and economic research as wasteful spending, writes Michael S. Lubell, a physics professor at the City College of the City University of New York. But these types of research projects are vital, and efforts to defund them might be motivated at least in part by politics, he contends. "Understanding complex systems, the essence of SBE research, is extraordinarily difficult but also enormously significant," he writes.
