Modified lawn mowers go beyond the yard and onto the racetrack

Lawn mowers with upgrades for speed are gaining traction as lawn-mower racing grows in popularity, according to this article. The U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association was an April Fools' Day joke in 1992 but now employs a rule book and prerace inspections. Modified mowers can stand 2 inches above the ground and reach speeds up to 60 mph, but they "must retain some resemblance" to an original lawn mower, according to the USLMRA rule book.
