Wildfires have burned about 33 square miles in two counties in Oregon, prompting a state-of-emergency declaration by Gov. John Kitzhaber. The Northwest is the priority area for the National Interagency Fire Center so that the region can have increased access to firefighting crews and equipment. "Oregon and Washington are entering the most serious part of fire season," said Don Smurthwaite, spokesman for the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center.
