San Francisco to turn Superfund site into mixed-use development

The San Francisco County board of supervisors has approved turning the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, a 936-acre Superfund site, into a mixed-use development of 10,500 new homes, more than 800,000 square feet of retail space, hundreds of acres of open space and, possibly, a football stadium for the '49ers. Much of the site is still being remediated to remove toxic chemicals. Once complete, the project is expected to create $11 billion in property taxes and as much as 12,000 jobs.
