Flywheels, lithium-ion batteries power grid-scale projects

Beacon Power reported completing a grid-scale power storage plant using its flywheel technology, a 20MW facility that will provide frequency regulation services for New York state's Independent System Operator. The plant in Stephentown, N.Y., has 200 flywheels. Meanwhile, AES Energy Storage said its 12MW Los Andes battery energy storage system in the Atacama Desert of Chile has been operating for more than 18 months, providing an energy reserve for Chile's northern power grid. The Los Andes system is based on lithium-ion batteries.
