Pets' passing teaches the need to appreciate time together

About 62% of American households own dogs and cats, according to AVMA statistics, and many including writer Steve Dorfman can't imagine living in a home without pets, but the relationship also comes with the sadness of saying goodbye to the pets that typically live much shorter lives than people. For Dorfman, the lesson came when he lost Tanner, his cat of 10 years, to congestive heart failure.
