Some algae-to-fuel startups shift attention to biochemicals, oils

The sluggish growth of the algae fuel market is prompting some developers to diversify into making biochemicals or replacements for unsustainable bio-based oils, insiders said. The skin- and personal-care markets for bio-based materials allow developers to "sell low volumes at high margins," said Stephanie Tabor, corporate communication associate for Solazyme.
