FTC to overhaul child-protection rules for Web ads

The Federal Trade Commission is poised to launch a crackdown on social networks and Web advertisers in a bid to bolster online protections for children. The move, intended to close loopholes currently used to track children online, updates the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act to cover new technologies such as smartphones and social tools, and makes host websites and third-party providers such as ad networks legally responsible for any violations.
