Encourage innovation to improve quality, lower costs

Eighty percent of seniors have at least one chronic disease, accounting for 95% of all Medicare spending, and Alzheimer's disease alone is projected to cost Medicare and Medicaid more than $1.2 trillion annually by 2050, writes Mary Grealy, president of the Healthcare Leadership Council. Instead of declining to cover diagnostics in clinical practice, as the CMS recently did, making early breakthroughs available to patients will encourage more innovation, ultimately improving care and driving down costs, Grealy writes.
