Federal budget cuts will affect nursing education, research

Nursing education programs and research funding will suffer due to sequestration budget cuts, and there are anecdotal reports of hospitals cutting staff, according to nursing and health care organizations. The greatest direct effect may be felt in nursing education, according to Jan Towers, senior policy adviser for the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. Columbia University School of Nursing professor Bobbie Berkowitz said nurse researchers will have more competition for grant money for studies directly related to patient care, including hospice, patient-centered outcomes and prevention.
