Hybrid solar projects aim for 24/7 power output

The combination of photovoltaics and solar thermal technology could produce round-the-clock solar power, available at night and under cloud cover. The Advanced Research Projects Agency–Energy is directing $30 million to several demonstration projects with this goal. Different approaches involve splitting up the solar spectrum or producing solar cells that can withstand higher temperatures.
