Research ship to study deep-sea dead zone

A research ship funded to the tune of $60 million by Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt was scheduled to set sail Thursday to study an area of the Pacific Ocean where a periodic lack of oxygen destroys all sea life there. The 272-foot Falcor is outfitted with an unmanned submarine for deep-sea study as well as amenities not often found on a research vessel, such as a sauna and down-filled bunks.
