Researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center suggest F-18 FDG PET may not be suitable for macrophage imaging of atherosclerosis. The study used the approach to detect glucose uptake as a way of looking at track macrophage activation in a mouse model. According to findings published in the Journal of Nuclear Medicine, glucose metabolism was independent of the polarization state and F-18 FDG PET was unable to identify macrophage polarization.
