Rackspace Hosting is one company that has had to significantly increase its spending to defend itself from lawsuits by patent entities, Rackspace executive Van Lindberg told the House Judiciary Committee's subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet. "Patent trolls are a massive problem for our industry," he said. Lawmakers are questioning whether open-source technology is a problem under current patent laws, Amrita Khalid writes. In addition, EFF, a civil rights group, is working with organizations like the Application Developers Alliance to produce an online tool called Trolling Effects. "Trolling Effects will shine a light on companies that abuse the patent system to shake down innovators," EFF's Adi Kamdar says.
