Telemedicine initiative boosts inmates' access to mental health services

The Children's Home of Jefferson County in Watertown, N.Y., has partnered with the county jail to enhance inmates' access to mental health services through a telepsychiatry initiative that will enable them to seek care without having to leave the facility. The jail has three video teleconferencing terminals that inmates can use to ask for help regarding mental health, medical and legal matters. In addition, the jail is collaborating with the Fort Drum Regional Health Planning Organization to implement EMRs, since the facility still uses paper charts.
