Twitter says government inquiries for information are up 40%

Government agency inquiries for information from Twitter rose 40% in the past six-month period, according to the company's semiannual transparency report. The U.S. government was responsible for 75% of 1,157 data requests, mostly seeking e-mail and IP addresses associated with tweets, a number that doesn't include secret requests under the Patriot Act. Foreign governments have increased their requests, often under local anti-defamation laws, and Twitter censorship has risen from two to seven foreign countries.
