U.S. drivers traveling less by car

The average licensed U.S. driver drove 12,492 miles during 2011, which continues a gradual decline in recent years and is down nearly 9% from the 2004 peak. This article lists four contributing factors, plus the increase in young people who forgo driving. "The trends in these underlying factors suggests a major societal change with respect to personal transportation," said Michael Sivak of the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute.
