Want better innovation? Go live where the engineers do

A new ranking lists American cities on their potential for innovation, based on factors such as the number of engineers per thousand employees and the presence of top-flight research institutions. Silicon Valley is at the top of the list, but less obvious picks include Houston and Wichita, Kan. "Wichita has not done nearly as well economically of late as San Jose or Houston, but its reservoir of engineering talent suggests considerable potential if they stick around," writes Joel Kotkin.
