Civilian life poses mental health challenges for Guardsmen, study finds

Guardsmen who abuse alcohol are troubled more by civilian problems such as job loss than by combat experiences, according to a study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. "What defines long-term mental health problems among Guardsmen is having to deal with a lot of daily life difficulties that arise in the aftermath of deployment," lead researcher Magdalena Cerda said.
