FDA's Total Diet Studies keep U.S. consumers safe

Since its inception in 1961, the FDA's Total Diet Study has discovered about 5,000 toxic elements in U.S. food products. Done four times per year, FDA employees across the country purchase 280 food products at supermarkets that make up a typical grocery list and ship them to an FDA laboratory. After the food is prepared, food scientists analyze the products for pesticide residues and toxic elements.
