Index on China's factory output falls to a 16-month low

China's manufacturing output shifted last month from expansion to contraction for the first time since March 2009, according to a purchasing managers' index from HSBC. The index eased down from 50.4 in June to 49.4 in July. A similar government index confirms the decline but indicates that manufacturing still experienced some growth.
