$5.5 billion Panama Canal expansion aims to increase cargo capacity

The Panama Canal is undergoing a $5.5 billion expansion that will increase the amount of cargo that the canal can handle from 340 million tons a year to 600 tons a year, according to an engineer working on the project. The expansion, scheduled to be completed in 2014, will give the canal a third channel capable of handling larger ships.
