IOM makes recommendations on disease surveillance system

The Institute of Medicine has issued a proposed guide on creating a national chronic disease surveillance system for cardiovascular and chronic lung diseases. Providing data on disparities and prevalence of the diseases by ethnicity, socioeconomic status and geographic region should be addressed by the system, which should be led by federal regulators, the IOM stated.
