Serving sizes in labels may obscure food's real calorie, sodium content

A 1-cup serving of a canned chicken noodle soup may contain up to 790 milligrams of sodium, while a half-cup serving of vanilla ice cream may have 10 grams of saturated fat, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest. However, a poll conducted by the group found that about 64% of respondents would consume a whole can of chicken noodle soup, and only 10% were likely to eat only a 1-cup portion; many said they were likely to consume a full cup of ice cream. The findings underscore the need for the FDA to revise its serving-size regulations, the group said.
