Community colleges hit hardest by La. budget cuts

Two-year community colleges in Louisiana saw funding reduced by 26.3% -- compared with just 18.2% for four-year schools -- between 2008 and 2012, according to the Southern Regional Education Board's 2013 Fact Book. Nunez Community College faculty member Dawn Ruth writes in this commentary that the cuts, especially in midsemester, affect everything from salaries to class schedules. "When the state cuts college budgets in later months, colleges are left with inadequate money to finish the semester, which forces them to dip into rapidly disappearing emergency funds," Ruth writes.
