Farm bill in jeopardy as House proposes deeper food stamp cuts

Passage of a final farm bill may be in danger after House Republicans proposed a $40 billion cut in food stamps -- twice the amount they sought in the previously defeated bill. The House will vote on the new cuts before the House and Senate meet to work out differences in their two bills. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., chairwoman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, said the new cuts will make it hard to get the bill passed before agricultural programs expire on Sept. 30.
