Des Moines school officials stymied by blacks' suspension rate

In Des Moines last year, black students, who make up 15.3% of elementary and 17.3% of middle school enrollments, received, respectively, 36.8% and 27.4% of suspensions. Although Superintendent Eric Witherspoon can't explain the disproportionate suspension rate, some blacks in the community are concerned about the role race may be playing.
