Consumers are picking less-expensive food options

More consumers are downgrading their food choices, replacing high-end items such as rosemary bread with whole wheat and opting for store brands over big names in an effort to trim their budgets. The trend is causing sales to flatten at grocery stores such as Safeway, Kroger and Costco, and forcing supermarket executives to offer more deals in an effort to boost profits.
