REIT dividends complicate short sales

It's not difficult to see why investors might consider shorting commercial real estate stocks, but it could be quite risky. When you borrow shares to short them, you're going to have to pay the lender the dividend paid by the company that issued shares. Many REITs are paying 9%, which could be an expensive way to speculate.
