Experts raise concerns about transfusion-related adverse events

Medical experts are becoming increasingly concerned about the adverse events that can result from blood transfusions, including infection, heart attack or stroke, and even death. One study discovered that just receiving a unit of blood can raise by 32% the risk of dying in 30 days or of contracting infections by 23%, while another study found the risk of heart attack and stroke tripled in those who underwent red-blood-cell transfusions. A study currently under way is trying to figure out whether giving blood only if a person's hemoglobin level has reached lower than 7.5 during surgery would work.
