Fed support for economy to continue in near term, Bernanke says

Spending cuts and worker layoffs by state and local governments have contributed to the slow national recovery, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said Monday. As many Americans continue to struggle with joblessness, home foreclosures and eroded savings, the federal government needs to continue its support for the economy in the short term, he said. "We have to be careful about tightening too quickly in the near term," Bernanke said.
