Department stores are not dead yet

Strong sales gains for Macy's, Nordstrom and Kohl's show the department store is far from dead. In fact, their scale, in-house lines and web of third-party vendors have proven to be strong points over the years. The ability to update merchandise quickly can keep them competitive with specialty stores and even big-box stores like Wal-Mart. A National Retail Federation survey showed department stores are the second most popular destination for back-to-school shoppers behind discounters.
