Tax increase to support education picks up backers in Colo.

Colorado state Sen. Rollie Heath (D) has earned the backing of the Colorado Association of School Boards and the Colorado Association of School Executives in his effort to fund education with a $3 billion tax increase. The ballot initiative has collected 142,000 signatures and would raise the state income tax from 4.63% to 5% for five years and increase the state sales tax by 0.1% for the same period. The proposal has not yet won the support of the state's largest teachers union.
