Feds open comment period on rules for shipping flammable fuels by rail

The Transportation Department on Friday signaled the start of a 60-day public comment period on its proposed safety rules for trains carrying crude oil and other flammable liquids after officially publishing the standards in the Federal Register. An extension of the period is unlikely "given the urgency of the safety issues addressed in these proposals," the department said. Comments are expected to deal with three potential standards for speed limits and three choices for the thickness of train cars' steel covering.
