Cool roofs are getting more attention as energy savers

Cool roofs and pavements are being touted by federal researchers as an effective way to decrease energy costs and reduce carbon dioxide emissions, writes Korky Koroluk. By simply making a roof lighter in color, cooling costs can be decreased by 52%, he notes. U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu has ordered cool roofs to be used within his department when they can be cost-effective over the roof's life.
