"Static kill" tactic is a success, BP says

The Gulf of Mexico oil leak has been plugged using a "static kill" technique, BP officials said today. The effort, which involves using "heavy mud" to seal the well shaft, began Tuesday night and was halted this morning after apparently achieving a complete seal. Officials warned that more mud might be needed. If the seal holds, BP will add cement for a permanent plug.
