Washington state can't afford Highway 520 bridge work

A $2 billion shortfall in the funds needed to pay for a new floating bridge along Highway 520 in Seattle has yet to be plugged. Roughly two-thirds of the new six-lane crossing can be finished with the money available; the total project cost runs $4.65 billion. The state is now considering a tax increase, new tolls or a combination of both to raise money.
