Young Chinese are struggling with writing Mandarin characters

As young Chinese increasingly use computers and cell phones to communicate with a Romanised version of Mandarin, many say they are forgetting how to write out Chinese characters. A recent poll by the China Youth Daily newspaper found that 83% of the more than 2,000 participants have problems writing out Mandarin characters. Lu Jianming, a professor at Peking University, says the characters represent "the essence of Chinese culture."
