Daily Economic Indicator: First-time jobless claims drop

First-time claims for jobless benefits fell by 1,000, to 400,000, in the week ended July 30, bringing total new claims to the smallest number in nearly four months, the Labor Department said. The four-week rolling average, viewed by many economists as a more reliable indicator than the volatile weekly figures, declined to its lowest number since April.
