Eastern equine encephalitis surfaces in the Northeast

A horse in Oneida County, N.Y., was euthanized after contracting the county's first confirmed case this year of eastern equine encephalitis, a serious mosquito-borne virus that affects horses in particular and nearly always results in death. Officials in northeastern Massachusetts have identified an infected mosquito pool there, but say the virus is moving more slowly this summer than last.
