Grassroots QI programs may be best path to better care

Grassroots endeavors from within the health care system may be the best route for improving patient safety and quality of care, experts say. The National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, which uses data from hospital charts and follows patients for 30 days, is one such initiative, and participating hospitals have reported lower rates of deaths and complications, along with reduced costs.
