How "edge" innovation went mainstream

"Edge" innovations, created by small businesses in niche markets, are increasingly applied by big companies to solve problems on a far larger scale. Companies such as Hello Health, Voxiva, Haier and Embraer all started as bit players before scaling up their key innovations. "Edge conditions, whether in Brooklyn or India, can be right outside your front door," says Fred Dust, head of IDEO's System at Scale. "And their solutions can change how the masses do business."
