Southwest Airlines Q2 profit increases despite fuel costs

Southwest Airlines reported a profit of $161 million for the second quarter, compared with a profit of $112 million for the same quarter last year. However, earnings per share when excluding one-time items missed analysts' estimates. The carrier faced a 64% surge in fuel costs and also incurred costs prompted by its merger with AirTran Airways.
