Calif. program preps teachers to demonstrate relevancy of math

Some educators from the San Francisco Bay area are learning how to use hands-on lessons in math class during an eight-week summer program, where engineers and technicians from companies, such as Dow Chemical and Intel, highlight how math connects to the real world. "I've been seeing students not prepared in geometry and precalculus," algebra teacher Kavous Mazaheri said, adding that he plans to transform his math class into a science lab. "If you walk into my classroom, you're going to be confused about if it is a chemistry lab or a physics lab or a math class. I'm going to use experimental algebra," he said.
