Chicago sees solid gains in reading

After four cycles of virtual stagnation, Chicago reading scores in grades three, eight and 11 hit all-time highs this year, although math scores for all grades declined. Some say 11th-graders' reading gains indicate a three-year-old program of double reading periods for struggling high school students is working.
