Demand for smaller rental cars is on the rise as gas prices hover around $4 a gallon, presenting a challenge for rental companies. "Four dollars (a gallon) has been the tipping point," said Chris Payne, a Dollar Thrifty Automotive representative. "Many customers don't want larger cars now." Sabre Holdings said bookings in the second quarter for compact cars increased 11% while those for economy cars were up 15% compared with the same period the previous year.
