Passenger rail plans take shape coast to coast

Plans for passenger trains, high-speed and otherwise, continue to move forward nationwide. The California High-Speed Rail Authority plans to submit four separate federal grant applications as the state searches for seed money to advance its high-speed rail project. Meanwhile, North Carolina is pursuing grants for passenger stations. And in the Northeast, Amtrak's upgrade of its Downeaster line in Maine has other areas of New England mulling the role of passenger railways in the region.
