If companies want to develop a successful succession plan, then leaders need to do a tough self-assessment to see whether they're doing enough to help employees grow, Dan McCarthy writes. He suggests leaders should grade themselves on issues such as coaching and recognition. "With commitment from the top, even the most incompetent HR department couldn't possibly screw [succession planning] up," he writes.
