U.S. judge permits Shell to conduct limited work on Alaska leases

Royal Dutch Shell secured District Court Judge Ralph Beistline's approval to conduct "shallow-hazards surveys" and environmental research on its leases in Alaska's Chukchi Sea. Beistline last month halted exploration in the area after he cited the federal government's incomplete environmental review before conducting a lease auction. "The contemplated activity does not include drilling and may have the benefit of assisting the parties in determining the propriety of future activities," he said.
